New National Hub for Advanced Welding Technology
Högskolan Väst is establishing a national centre of expertise in advanced welding technology at the Production Technology Centre (PTC) in Trollhättan. The initiative will give industrial companies new opportunities to test materials, develop products, and explore advanced manufacturing methods in collaboration with researchers.
New Opportunities for Industrial Innovation
The new testbed will focus on friction stir welding (FSW), a technology used in industries including aerospace and automotive manufacturing. The equipment is expected to become operational before summer 2027, enabling companies to test the technology on a range of materials, from lightweight metals to advanced superalloys.
Six companies are already involved in the initiative, including Volvo Cars, GKN Aerospace, and Saab Aeronautics. Additional industry partners are welcome to participate, and the testbed will be available for companies to book testing and laboratory sessions.
For Western Sweden, the initiative represents a significant addition to the region’s advanced manufacturing test and development facilities. By bringing together research, industry, and specialised equipment, it creates new opportunities for innovation, product development, and industrial transformation.
The initiative is funded by Region Västra Götaland.
